B4187 Fine Regency Japanned Games Table
with folding top opening to reveal a chess-board, raised on quadruple scroll support and concave-sided plinth base with lotus feet; decorated in chinoiserie style in imitation of oriental lacquer partly on tole panels. The japanned tole frieze panels possibly supplied by the Pontypool factory, owned and run by the Allgood family from the middle of the 19th century till about 1820. Japanned tole panels used on furniture are rare, but a beautiful side-cabinet, the design attributed to Frederick Crace and similar in feeling to the present table, was sold from the Collection of the Dukes of Devonshire, Chatsworth, by Sotheby's, 5th October 2010, lot 370
