B876 William and Mary Carved and Painted Stand
probably intended to support a large oriental pot or a bust. A stand of very similar form (putti flanking a vase) is shown in the 1845 watercolour of the staircase of Montagu House (as re-built in 1686) by George Scharf the Elder (British Museum, Department of Prints and Drawings) shortly before it was demolished to make way for the new building by Robert Smirke. Also compare the design for a chimneypiece by William Talman executed for the unbuilt Trianon at Hampton Court, in the RIBA collection, which is surmounted by a truncated urn flanked by cherubs and supporting a bust.
